Moles

The Hills Are Alive With Moles.

Moles! – Why did they pick on my garden?

The little tunnelling mammals are, at best cute and at worse really annoying.

For a small, territorial animal, they can cause an amazing of disruption. From ruining lawns to upending bedding plants, they are like the “teenagers” of our gardens and quiet, rural areas where we like to relax.

If we leave them uncontrolled we run the risk of damage beyond repair. Believe me, I have seen lawns and flowerbeds absolutely decimated.

I once attended a paddock, near Wellingborough, that housed two show jumping horses. This particular area was peppered with Mole hills. Now. if one of those ponies had stood on a Mole hill or a shallow Mole tunnel just below the surface, it may have broken a leg with goodness knows what outcome. On this occasion I was able to trap the Moles over a two-week period and then return the horses to their safe home, Job Done?

I’m afraid not……… Moles, being territorial, will take over absent tunnels and territories, of absent Moles, therefore making Mole Control an on-going challenge.

Having said that, controlling Moles by trapping or gassing (under the correct condition and all the health and safety boxes are tick we can use Aluminium Phosphide) is the only way to reduce the numbers in your area, meaning: Less Moles – Less Moles to Breed.

I’ve been trapping Moles for about 30 years now, using various types of traps. All the villages around, Rushden, Wellingborough, Kettering, Corby, Raunds, Thrapston, indeed all over the Northamptonshire area. I must have seen all types of situations from gardens, sports fields, cemeteries, farms, horse and livestock paddocks, golf courses, football grounds, etc.

Ever heard the expression “making a mountain out of a molehill”? When moles dig tunnels, all that dirt has to go somewhere—it gets piled in “molehills” near the entrance to the tunnel. These hills of dirt indicate that a mole is living nearby.

One thing I do know after all my years spent here at Pestwise Pest Control, you can’t see where Mr Mole is, you can only see where it’s been. You can’t predict where it’s going with any certainty but experience helps me second guess my little furry friends next move.
